The ritzy Mr. Jay Gatsby known to be a “swell” is now in the news for all the awry reasons. The “great” Gatsby as he is called is left holding the bag for “bootlegging” by his rumored mistress, Daisy Buchanan’s husband. Tom Buchanan who himself is known to be a bimbo has accused the West Egg man of being a hooch.
The incident took place in a hotel room of the Plaza at the Central Park in New York on a hot, sunny evening. Our magazine’s reporter had seen Gatsby and Mr. Buchanan’s car parked outside the Plaza. Jordan baker, a famous golf player, Daisy Buchanan, Gatsby’s love interest, Nick Carraway, a bondman and resident of West Egg were also present when the incident had taken place. On the face of it, Buchanan had fathomed Gatsby and Daisy’s secret love affair and investigated Gatsby’s past. He wished to confront his wife and Gatsby on their love affair due to his growing insecurity.
Tom had allegedly said “Who is this Gatsby anyhow? Some big bootlegger?” and had on a later occasion claimed that he had found out about his and Meyer Wolfshiem’s drug stores and their involvement in bootlegging through his foe Walter Chase who had been working for Wolfshiem. Gatsby had agreed upon knowing Walter and his involvement in the drug stores. So is the Bee’s knee of New York really a bootlegger?!
We have known Meyer Wolfshiem for fixing the World Series and on occasions, witnessed Gatsby and Wolfshiem together at restaurants as well as parties. Does Gatsby really own speakeasies and make the rubes by selling drugs? We don’t know from nothing!
Tom Buchanan, as we know, is an insecure man who had his affairs and did his mistakes. Is it right to swallow such a man’s words and go against our dear darb, Gatsby? Tom could have been cooking stories to win his wife Daisy’s heart. On an earlier occasion, we had heard that Myrtle Wilson, Tom’s rumored love interest would be leaving the city. Had tom falsely accused Gatsby due to his increasing insecurity?
Yet we derive from the conversation that Gatsby had agreed upon knowing Walter Chase who worked at his drug store. If he wasn’t involved in such a business, how could he have known Chase? So, does this mean Gatsby is really a bootlegger? Is the mystery man’s secret revealed? How about Daisy? Would she accept Gatsby as her love even after such a confession?
On questioning Nick Carraway, a person who has been involved in all of their lives for a while, he had not given our magazine any reply. The “old sport” wishes to keep himself safe and out of the mess! Atta boy!
On questioning Jordan Baker, she had told us about knowing about Daisy and Gatsby’s love affair since the very beginning and how Daisy had chosen Tom over Gatsby in the past. Let us wait and see who she chooses this time!
We had also questioned Gatsby who had simply smiled and said “Farewell, Old sport” before driving away in his fancy, yellow car with Daisy.
Tom Buchanan had a lot more allegation to make and yet was too irked to talk any further.
One of our very daring reporters found courage to speak to Meyer Wolfshiem to confirm if such news were true and in reply received a recitation of “Gatsby is an Oggsford man and perfect gentlemen”. Doesn’t think with his own mind, maybe!
During his conversation with Gatsby, Buchanan had mentioned that Walter was afraid to tell Buchanan another secret of Gatsby’s. What could this one be? Had he killed a man? Had he fought the war? None of our beewax!
